Clear yellow in the glass with first scents of pear, white peach and nectarine. The mouth changes as those ripe fruits are replaced by ripe citrus and crisp, fresh acidity. Enough texture to carry all of those flavors along with their aromatic density though the palate with whispers of spicy white pepper on the finish. Crisp, clean and mineral - Chablis!
HOLIDAY PAIRING: The perfect way to start 12 Nights of Wine. Wash away the lingering Gingerbread Spiced, Pumpkin Spiced, Fermented Turmeric or whatever kind of lattes that got you through your hectic day and prepare your palate for the next 11 stunning wines.
A fun and unique wine made from grapes left to mature a touch longer on the vine, concentrating the fruit flavors to pie-filling like richness. However, the wine is then vinified dry - not sweet! - and aged in a combination of stainless steel and oak to maintain all of the mature fruit characteristics. Just enough velvety smooth tannins surround the core of ripe blackcurrant jam, raspberry pastry-filling and a just touch of floral-scented wood.
HOLIDAY PAIRING: Light meats, lightly spiced dark meats and dark spiced fall scented candles. Be sure to savor this one - or not. It’s the holidays, so you do you.
The heavy presence of Mourvédre in this blend makes for a strong character in a light wine. Intense fruit and floral notes of stargazer lily and fresh cut strawberries are almost concentrated in nature. Following the initial outburst of scents come notes of peach, pomegranate and delicate spice notes to balance out the wine.
HOLIDAY PAIRING: Just close your eyes and think of that warm weather vacation coming up. Oh, and get some spicy take-out to pair with this wine. Spicy seafood tacos would complete the mental vacation.
Classic white barrel aged Burgundy. Sugar torched pineapple and candied orange zest mingle with ripe yellow fruits and flowers amongst a background of brioche toast and lightly sweetened buttercream chiffon. A biting baked Meyer lemon acidity keeps everything fresh and tidy, and a finish of tart quince and white peach wraps up a beautiful classical white Burgundy.
HOLIDAY PAIRING: Pop this one in your bag and bring it to a holiday blockbuster (wait, they made another Star Wars?!). A buttery Chardonnay paired with buttered movie theatre popcorn and a matinée is perfection.
This Sangiovese-based wine is vinified in concrete and aged in oak for a little over six months, in order to preserve the quality of the grapes. The result is an intense ruby-colored Chianti drinking with prominent dusty cherry and fresh blackberry fruit with underlying hints of brambly forest floor and a clean, clear finish.
HOLIDAY PAIRING: Works wonderfully alongside putting the TV news cycle on mute, unplugging and reading a book. Fiction, please!
This is the “blend” of the two polarizing styles of what Chardonnay can be. On the one hand being full of notes of bright spring flowers, honeysuckle, lime zest, and Meyer lemon. On the other hand, still embracing the buttery richness and tropical fruit notes of candied pineapple and baked apple pie that Chardonnay can produce. With an average vine age of 45 years, this unoaked yet powerful Chardonnay benefits from the maturity of its first home - the vineyard.
HOLIDAY PAIRING: Think of this wine as an intermezzo, before the final six wines. This balanced Burgundy pairs with pretty much everything and is a real crowd pleaser, unlike Buzz’s girlfriend. Woof.
Dense tannins, powerful black fruits and very fine acidity. Almost black in color, the wine is graceful amongst its power. Aged for over 20 months, including 12 in barrels, the wine is ready to be enjoyed as soon as the winery releases it, with an additional few years of aging potential for those with patience. Notes of roasted nuts, toast and coffee mingle with candied black fruits and a seemingly melted oak flavor. Yum.
HOLIDAY PAIRING: You won't care if everybody is smiling in the family portrait or not after drinking this wine as the complex flavors and myriad aromas will have your mind occupied for hours ;)
Big, dry and pruney in the best way - the darker side of Malbec. Concentrated vinous flavors and ripeness dominate, but the wine is far from cloying or intrusive. Blackberry and currant are the main fruit culprits throughout, with noticeable integrated oak also along for the ride.
HOLIDAY PAIRING: The bold aromas of the wine do well to help drown out the sounds of family arguing, children demanding dino-shaped chicken nuggets, and Fortnite sounds in the background.
A 50-50 blend of local white grapes, the nose is powerful but still fresh with notes of ripe stone fruit and sweet summer hay. The palate brings a touch of grassiness before the fragrant fruitiness wallops you with ripe pear and peach.
HOLIDAY PAIRING: Use that discount code you’ve been holding onto for your favorite food ordering app and add some hot Thai or Indian takeout to your cart. This somewhat weighty white (it’s just winter weight!) is beautiful with spicy food.
The most well-known Nebbiolo region, and for good reasons - and this time a single vineyard Barolo! Released 4 full years after harvest, 3 of those spent in oak, Barolo is a powerhouse of rich rose and anise aromas and mouth-drying tannins. The paradox is that all of this is contained within a seemingly light wine; coffee, vanilla, red cherry, potpourri, allspice, truffles, tar, liquorice and primordial Earth are all here. Oh, and tons and tons of enjoyable fruit on top of those gripping, addictive tannins. The King Of Italy!
HOLIDAY PAIRING: Cheese and crackers! Take out the Boursin and salty crackers or strong blue and fruit preserves and make it a “fancy” night. You deserve it.
In the last 20 years only one Bordeaux vintage has been rated 99 across the board: 2010. Dense, opulent and ripe with stain-your-fingers juicy blackberry notes and firm, smoky tannins. This historic vintage is rich with fruitiness and just now evolving into more mature flavors. Enjoy!
HOLIDAY PAIRING: As classic as "It's A Wonderful Life" on Christmas Eve. Enjoy this last glass while getting ready for your holiday party or making final preparations for the big day. Happy Holidays from all of us here at VINEBOX. You got this!
